Gap density sensor automates sugar clarification process

During the sugar production process, the juice is clarified within decantation tanks. Flocculants added to the solution improve the settling rate and the overall clarity of the sugar solution. Controlling the amount of flocculant is critical to the process: too high a concentration can contaminate the cleaned juice, creating additional production costs and loss of revenue.

CHALLENGE

 

The concentration within the decantation tank must be tightly controlled. The plant instrumentation engineers for this particular customer found that displacer transmitters required frequent cleaning, and measurements were neither accurate nor reliable.

 

The concentration was therefore being controlled manually by looking at the slurry through a tank window; this manual intervention was highly subjective and often led to wasted product.

SOLUTION

 

An MSM433 gap sensor was installed in the tank. Extensive experimentation found that the ideal angle was 30 degrees to the horizontal. The MSM400 controller drives the sensor, and the 4-20mA output is sent to a P.I. controller.

 

The output opens or closes a valve proportionally to achieve the required slurry concentration level. The higher the solids concentration in the slurry, the wider the valve opens. This system has been working for several years with excellent results, and is now used in sugar plants globally.
